Training on Script Writing

Scriptwriting Training was organized at IFA for 10 days from 19-28 June 2011 where there were 18 participants. The mentors for the training were a scriptwriter Anup Subedi and the director Nabin Subba.
The participants for the training were selected on the basis of their submitted stories which were unique and realistic. The participants were mostly young and novice representing individual indigenous ethnic group. 7 of them were from non-indigenous communities.
Before the training, 1  Orientation program and 1 day workshop on presentation of stories were also organised earlier in Jan 2011 and March 2011 respectively.

In the training following contents were covered

Script-writing workshop

What is film?
Discussion with participants about 'Film is a story told through visual language in support of sound'.
What is script?
Discussion with participants about importance of script to make film.
Script is a story told with pictures in descriptions and dialogue and placed within the context of dramatic structure.
Where does writer begin?
Writer begins with Idea. Idea comes from different sources. Discussion about source of idea and elements of good idea for building script. Character, conflict, circumstances etc.
Script writing is easy job. It is character's main attempt to resolve her conflict. conflict is the respiration of drama. Through your character in pond of problems (to create the conflict) and let her swim to come out from that pond in the logic of her character and circumstances, and write the process.
Script(drama) is all about character handling her conflict.
First, think about ending. ending is how the conflict resolved. Kinds of story ending.
Participants will work to find their character's main conflict in their story.


Character
Film is all about Character, his dream, goal, attitude, his relationship etc.
How do make interesting character? Characters world, characteristics, characterization. Character and level of conflict.
Point of View (POV) in storytelling, role of POV.
Participants will write the main points of Character biography in bullet form.


Dramatic structure
Structure is the skeleton of script. Structure is the arrangements or interrelation of all parts of a whole anything put together systematically. Plot.
Beginning
Middle
End
Participants will structure their story in Dramatic structure.

Discussion and revision of participants dramatic structure.
Plot/Subplot
Dramatic progression
To move story forward,  there are some laws. suspense vs. anticipation, action-expectation-result (gap),  Set-up / Pay-off etc , complication/complexcity.
Dialogue
Dialogue is a function of character. It reveals  character and establishes relationships between characters.
Participants will make how their stories move forward and write outline of their storie.

 


Discussion about outline
5x5 cards and scene Event
what is scene? Scene is event, events means change, change in the life situation of character.
Participants will write their scene events of their stories in 3x5 cards.


Discussion and revision of participants work, scene events.
Act 1 the set-up, what elements should have in first ten pages, second ten pages and third ten pages.
Act 2 the confrontation,
Act 3 the Climax and the resolution.


Scene writing.
Structure of scene. Bits and scene. Every bit should move story forward. Descriptions and Dialogue.
Class work - Participants will write One scene from their story.

From this training, IFA expects to bring out 10 scripts by constant mentoring of the participants.
