Discussions worldwide have concluded that films must be accessible to all because film is a free medium of expression. In addition to promoting cross-cultural understanding, original filmmaking in the developing world builds on the power of indigenous storytelling traditions. IFA acknowledges that a powerful fusion with modern cultural media can build on, nourish, sustain and provide access to the rich cultural lessons offered by these films on indigeous traditions and wisdom.
What is the IFA Capital Fund? IFA Capital Fund is being established to support, motivate and inspire filmmakers to make films on indigenous issues, cultures, cultural practices, knowledge, skills and values. Small grants will be provided to support small productions or improve production conditions for projects which require larger budgets. The idea for the Capital Fund was inspired by the passion with which our 14 newly trained women filmmakers ventured into researching, scripting and producing short films on a cultural best practice within their own communities. Many of these films reflect the customs and customary laws that help to empower women in indigenous communities. This made IFA realize the vast scope of topics and themes that still need to be explored, researched, documented, shared and promoted even within the communities where these practices are slowly dying due to the influx of thoughts and trends foreign to their communities. Who can contribute to the Capital Fund? Any individual or organization interested in being part of an initiative to encourage independent production of fictional films and documents that play a 'catalyst' role for films on indigenous issues, knowledge, cultures, best and dying cultural practices can contribute to the Capital Fund. How does the Fund operate? The Fund will be deposited in the bank as seed money and grants will be provided from the interest to film - makers. The Board of Trustees of the IFA Capital Fund will decide who to fund. Who operates the IFA Capital Fund? The IFA Capital Fund will be operated by a Board of Trustees. The Board will comprise of intellectuals knowledgeable about indigenous issues, knowledge, skills and practices, filmmakers and marketing experts. Their mandate is to evaluate, select and monitor projects and promote the activities of the Capital Fund. IFA will coordinate and provide secretariat services to the Board of Trustees. Who can apply for the grant? Individuals from any community of Nepal can apply for the grant although priority will be given to indigenous filmmakers, women and highly marginalized groups. A call for proposals will be advertised by IFA and selection will be made according to the criteria set by the Board. |
